The Flying Scotsman on a damp and foggy day

The Flying Scotsman is on a visit to a Heritage Railway Line (North Yorkshire Moors Railway NYMR) close to where I live.
What you can't see in this image is how cold the wind was and the fact that the rain was blowing at me! Oh the joys of photography . The previous day I had been out capturing landscape images and the weather was glorious, blue sky and sun but on that day the Flying Scotsman wasn't running.

As always your thoughts and comment are welcome.

Very nice image! I think that the weather gives a nice mood to the shot

You may want to consider a crop that removes the photographers on the left and the tiny bit of the rock wall and fence posts in the lower right corner.

Best time for these sort of shots Peter. The cold helps to ring out the steam/smoke. Nicely captured.

Very good shot Peter, you've captured the moment so well and the composition works well with those fence lines. I think you've got a better angle than those " photo bombing togs" on the left! Some may want them cloned out but they don't bother me.

I saw a video recently where one of your fellow countrymen had lined himself up for the perfect shot of the Flying Scotaman only to have a modern Virgin train shoot past in the opposite direction completely ruining the opportunity!

Thanks Dave, I saw that too Dave. Since then Sir Richard Branson has since presented the photographer with free flights to somewhere exotic as a gesture of goodwill for spoiling his shot

What a difference a little bit of sunshine makes, this one was captured two days later.

Very nice Peter (referring to the first post),

I'm in two minds about the togs - they are very definitely a part of the scene, especially for this Loco recently.

Equally though, a shot without them might be more 'timeless', so perhaps clone remove them if doing a B&W conversion. If you crop them off, you would lose that tree, which I think aids the composition.

    UPDATE

The second (sunny) shot certainly makes a difference!

I have to say my brain keeps confusing the 'new' 60103 number with Tornado (60163), I just can't get used to it as am so used to 4472 - I'm sure they have their reasons for changing it (I know it did have the 60103 number once - amongst many others).

    Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave, it's visit has brought a lot of visitors to the area, tickets to ride on it had been sold out for some time so I was quite surprised to see empty seats in some carriages as it passed by. I'm not a great fan of B&W but... having read your timeless comments I think I may have ago with one of the foggy day images. Thanks for the inspiration

The second shot is a good one too Peter. The first shot was more of a scene shot with lovely atmoshere whereas the second is more a shot of the well lit train itself, albeit with a nice background.

I'm slightly envious Peter. I'm no steam buff but I do like to photograph these engines. Sadly though, because of the stupidity of one particular driver, one of the major operators has been banned from the rail network and most of this year's steam specials on the Hellifield Carlisle line have so far been cancelled. Maybe later in the year.

Just to give you an indication of how much interest the Flying Scotsman is creating this is just a quick grab shot. Look at the number of cars parked at the roadside beyond the togs and railway I suspect that there will be even more people visiting at the weekend. I was amazed at how far some of the people travelled to see this wonderful piece of engineering.

Fascinating scene with all the cars, but perhaps not surprising. A rare opportunity to move back in time and we all love nostalga I think.

Very quick, but something along the lines of ............

However, I am very conscious this is NOT my image and I'm making an interpretation completely devoid of the feeling that existed at the time of seeing this beauty rolling by.

Nicely captured, fence line adds a bit of energy to the composition.

Donald if that's a quick edit I doubt that I could produce anything near to it if I took all day trying to do so.
