Looks like a mean, wet day with flat lighting...how is it in color?

I just love this. Such a nice scene plus a bit of humour with the horse wishing the old guy would quit gabbing and let him/her get home to a nice dry warm stall.
I guess I wouldn't mind seeing the colour version, but I really, really like this one, and as has already been said the photo shows the weather quite well, which adds to the story.

My only slight negative thought concerns a small bright area above the man's hand and close to the leaves. Probably just a reflection of some sort, but I find it a little distracting so I would clone it away.

There are a few more very small bright spots scattered around the image which I would also remove

I really like this pic. Is the horse looking at you while the older fellow talks on? Such a happy look on the horse's face, ears forward, nose up and interested in what is going on around it. For me, the pic is great the way it is, no color needed!

What I find interesting is the direction of the mans thumb and index finger and the horses head, they mimic each other and it makes for a really nice balance. Well seen and captured.

A very nice scene, rendered somewhat 'timeless' by the monochrome.
I fear (perhaps unfounded) that the horse's 'rug' will be some nasty bright colour and that's why you went monochrome

I feel the need for just a little more foreground to act as a lead-in.

I doubt s/he'll be lucky enough to be going to a dry warm stall, probably just being moved between open fields for grazing and "lives out" - not that I'd call myself an expert, but it is probably more common here as we don't have your cold winters (thankfully).

William, it had been wet but the light mainly results from the fact that it was close to dusk and from the processing.

I do have the original unprocessed RAW colour file but I saw this as a mono from the outset. It was taken in the autumn. I wanted to bring out the horse and the figure but the Autumn colours, in the leaves in particular, tended to overshadow the both of them, so I used the conversion to subdue the brighter areas..
