That's a scoop Russ - unfortunately I already bought it.

Must be the end of the development road, though

Possibly the end of development, but maybe not. A few years ago Google bought snapseed, at the time by far the best mobile editing app on iPad/iPhone. Now the editor's functions are built into android ios and the software have seen updates (albeit not major new features) since then.

I think I am going to download the free version, anyway, as insurance. Presumably it doesn't need a licence key, so would be easy to install on new computers?

I am getting my money back -- I just bought it for my DIL and my son, her husband, told me (read this as 'announced') that it is a free software. I said 'announced' because he said it in a loud voice just before church sessions started. I argued that I only use legal software and 4 church members showed me their cell phones with the news. 'Shuddashurrup!!!

    Re: NIK collection FREE

When I read the announcement I pretty much drew the same conclusion that's expounded in the PCWorld article. One of Adobe's strongest attractions is relative stability in the software world.

The NIK tools are so different from others that it will be hard to be a "casual" user. I never really utilized Capture NX to its full capability but it was actually a pretty good non-destructive RAW editor. One reason I converted to LR was due to CNX going by the wayside.

But just think of all those wasted years, Steaphany, when you would have lost out on the joy of using them!

True Donald, plus who could have expected NIK's whole suite would ever been offered free to all

I'm hoping that folks here will have a quick look at this:

    http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57493481

It seems that Google acquires some sort of interest in whatever you produce and loads your computer up with spyware, some of which has nothing to do with this NIK, whatever that is.

I exaggerate a bit, to get y'alls attention but I heartily recommend a quick scan of what the detractors have to say.

I don't trust Google one bit, sorry.

I don't trust any of the large companies selling to mass consumer markets and I've recently come to distrust even the relatively small company that markets the cataloging software I use. However, I use their products because I also believe the risk-reward ratio indicates massive reward for comparatively minutely small amounts of risk. So, I'm willing to take them.

I for one am very happy to utilise free software and have spent the afternoon dredging though old images and applying different effects, great fun.
Now I'm going to look at a few tutorials to find out how to use it properly

    Re: NIK collection FREE

Thanks or the links Izzie I had found the Youtube tutorial which I found very helpful and I'm working my way through the other links when I have time.
Some of the filters are really great and I have been using the soft focus filter in Colour Effects a bit for a wedding I did recently, the customers thought they looked great
