The first photo, which includes the Jefferson Memorial, was captured 30 minutes after sunrise and the second photo was captured a little less than two hours after sunrise. Both photos were captured using a polarizer. The second photo was captured handheld because it would have been impossible to use a tripod. The first photo was captured using a tripod and a flash unit to brighten the flowers that otherwise would have been in nearly complete shadow. The flash unit's built-in diffuser was in position and the unit was handheld off-camera.
