    Donald's choice has a gotcha

Thanks to all who contributed when Donald opened his latest camera purchase groundwork to the open forum.
I'm sure many of us who have been of a like mind, benefited greatly.
But as the demonstrator of our new school management software system at work kept telling me.. "There is a gotcha"" The gotcha is when it doesn't work exactly as you need it, or there's more steps involved, or more info needed.

The gotcha here, is there's a new very similar model, same brand!
I have 3 trips planned this year, I will take the 7D, but I do struggle with shoulder pain & as we know the best camera is the 1 you have with you...

So I want to take a smaller one as well.

This shot of our 'new' dog settling in on our 'old' one, taken 2 days after she arrived, with the iPhone, because it was there.
I don't want to miss having a photo, because the camera was too heavy and bulky to 'have with me'

They've not settled in this way together again, but are getting on perfectly well.

    Anyway back to my 'gotcha'
Here is a screen shot of the specs.
The new one has no battery, so must be plug straight into computer or power to charge...not good.
But it does have the greater focal length range ... Good.
    Opinions & advice welcomed.
    Thanks!

For me, the two 'biggies' with the TZ110 seem to be:

    1) the greater focal zoom length and,
    2) the touchscreen

I think the fact that the TZ110 has 20MP versus the 12.8 of the LX100 is not that big a deal.

The greater focal zoom length for another $100, is pretty attractive. That being said, I love the LX100. It's a superb Zeiss lens (what lens is on the new one?).

Don't understand your bit, Kay, about no battery. This spec says it does have one. But, if it doesn't, then what is the expected 'charge' life? Might be as good as having a battery.

Both look capable, I assume price isn't a concern so it will probably come down to shooting style, end use for the captures, and ergonomics of handling the camera. One other option to consider is if you want video capability only one has that function. Difference in ISO ranges depend on how well the output will look.

    Thanks Donald & John
Price will be similar, so yes not a factor.
MP won't make a difference either, as first use will be social media share as we go (Daughter's idea of course, not me) & then, I make photo books of my trips, so not big enlargements.
Not sure I would appreciate the touch screen, but never having had it, hard to say.
Both do run video, I think.

The lens on the new one is Leica DC f2.8-5.9 (25-250), so that is the main point of difference I think. They are marketing this one as a travel camera based on the focal range, but as we know trying to get 1 lens to be a jack of all trades, can make it master of none.
I've messaged them about the battery, as it says it takes lithium ion, in 1 line, but then has a 'no' in another line on battery.
Did the LX100 come with a spare maybe?
The wifi capability direct from camera sounds great, Fashionista will need that for our NY trip.
Will await their response & head over to DPReview as well, that bald chap has Been a great source of info in the past

    Hi Kay,

I'm sure that "No" will turn out to be an error on the store's web page.

Check on Panasonic's web site, I'd be VERY surprised if it doesn't have a removable Li-Ion battery, since it says it has a charger.

In fact I just did and it shows a spare battery type DMW-BLG10E (in accessories section at bottom of this page).

I guess though, it is still possible that it is a USB charger that charges the battery in camera, which isn't ideal, I agree - since you can't charge one battery while shooting with camera using a second battery. I couldn't find enough detail on Panasonic's website to confirm or deny this, but if it is true, they'd hardly be making it obvious - what you need is an 'unboxing' review on YouTube, but I didn't find one.

    Cheers, Dave

I have problems using a camera without an integral eye-level viewfinder. In fact, I even have problems using an eye-level electronic viewfinder combined with a power zoom. I like TTL viewing and a manual zoom lens. I can frame the image better and follow moving subjects more easily using this combination.

I can see how the size of one of these cameras would be a great incentive to owning a small camera. However, I have a Canon SX-50 HS which I really seldom use. In fact, I have basically turned that camera over to my wife who likes it pretty well.

Richard, I share your opinion about an eye-level viewfinder, but the LX100 has one (an EVF). I think the other one does as well.

I have an LX100 but have never even seen a TZ110. It has a higher resolution but smaller sensor (1" vs. MFT), which ought to have a performance tradeoff, but I don't know whether it does. the dimensions suggest it is slightly more pocketable than the LX100. There ought to be a performance tradeoff from the larger zoom range, but again, I don't know if there is in this case. There is a review of the TZ110 here, but it barely mentions the LX100.

Yes, research ... but don't over-research. I started get in to that when I was looking. The advice from the folks on here was brilliant. But I got it down to a choice between two cameras and I was in danger of trying to do so much research that I forgot what I actually wanted to do was buy something. So there came a point where I had to consciously say to myself, 'Stop. Stop trying to find out more. Make a decision now.'

Ha ha I know what you mean & in fact I am most certainly a person who does on occasion suffer from 'analysis paralysis'
Don't get me started on trying to choose our accomodation!
