    Nuthatch

A shot from today, my Sigma 150mm macro lens does duty as a fixed focal of 225mm on my c sensor

The Nuthatch are one of my favorite little birds.

Nikon D7100, F7, 1/125th sec, iso 640 - cropped to about half the frame. It was a funny day for light and shade and fast changing between them so had to play a bit. I think the noise is okay at this iso

    Nuthatch

same guy, yep thats the right way up - they dont pay much attention to which way up they are a lot of the time

Yes good shots of a tricky subject.

Another one which, so far, I have failed to photograph.

Thanks Geoff, took me a while to find them - its only now that they have a brood that they are more busy and less flighty

    Re: Nuthatch

good captures. The first is the better, IMHO, because of the undistracting background. I think it would be better if you cropped a bunch off the top.

The first shot is really nice. Excellent detail and a relatively clean, contrasting BG. The second is an interesting behavioral shot. Really a cute little bird. Well done.

Bernard, thanks, go for it, happy to see yours

Dan K, cheers, yep the background is messy in 2nd - it was more a 'in its environement' shot, a record rather than a polished image.

Dan, thanks, yep was wanting a shot of a Nuthatch being a Nuthatch as it were

Both nice captures Mark. First one for preference if I have one but I think a tighter crop might be worth while. Some off the top and the LHS.

    Re: Nuthatch

Bernard, Yep - same here if its seed - the black sunflower seeds are the prefered choice

Thanks John, not sure about a further crop - its that old 'somewhere to fly to' cliche

Not really a cliché, just sound advice. However, I would say it applies more to where the bird (or whatever), is already in motion. If it's static, I'm not so sure.

    Re: Nuthatch

I have quite a bit of them in my garden. Maybe one day I can try to photograph them. Both of your shots here are good. The last edit is better, the behavioral shot is excellent to my eyes.

Yes that hits the nail on the head for me Mark. Complete emphasis on the a wonderful bird portrait and the distracting BG highlights eliminated.
