Gateway to Seville

Just for interest really.

Bridges seem to make good Mono subjects and I am sometimes taken with their architecture. This bridge is in Seville Spain. Seville sits on two arms of the river that flows through it and two of these bridges were planned for the Olympics to be known as the "Gateways" to the city. Sadly, as is so often the case, I believe the money ran out. The bridge is an impressive structure but I found it difficult to bring that out in the first ground level image. The second image isn't really of decent quality because of the difficulty of shooting into the mid day light. It was taken a couple of days later when we had climbed the bell tower of Seville Cathedral. I include because it was only then, from that viewpoint, that the stature of the bridge compared to its surroundings became clear.

The bridge in 2 looks very impressive.
Some how the images don't invite me to go to Seville, while I'm planning to go.
The bridge is designed by Santiago Calatrava. Famous for his design and notorious for his overpricing.

Thanks for the comments all and for the link George. It led me to this link and prompts a couple of corrections/Additions. It wasn't the Olympics but Expo 92. It's not (now) across the river but a canal. However, looking at the satellite image, it looks like the canal has been created by blocking off one end of what was one river arm. Finally, the bridge has a name - Puente del Alamillo.

George, don't let this put you off Seville. As a tourist destination for a medium break, it was both interesting and compact. Everything in the city is within walking distance. We loved it.

Now that I like the sound of.

I enjoyed Prague for a similar reason, as indeed you can walk the centre of London.

Both images work remarkably well, especially because I'm empathetic when it comes to understanding the impracticality of not always being able to shoot in ideal light while traveling. The first one would work really well for me if the sky had been cloudless.

Special thanks for sharing these images, as my wife and I were in Seville three years after the bridge was built and I don't remember seeing it.

I prefer the second shot better but wouldn't understand the environment without the first one. The second shot made the city looks like a miniature. Everything in it will seem liliputian. What a nice angle!

I can't find it back, but I thought having read this bridge is only for pedestrians. Maybe you can tell me. And I can't find anything about the financial history of this bridge.

After Spain joined the EU it received a lot of money from Brussel. They used it mostly for their infrastructure: roads, bridges, train.

Hi George, the bridge is for both pedestrians and for motor vehicles. It has a central pavement reserved for pedestrians and bicycles on either side of which are two vehicle lanes. See below.(BTW these are SOOC so they are a PP free zone ) For the financial history, see here
