Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Oh, thanks for the detail, Geoff. Now I am curious about the symbolism of the crest! I had never heard of the RNLI, but see from Wikipedia that it is still a very active, volunteer lifesaving organization.
A very nice set. I quite like how the red buoys punctuate the drizzly scene in the second image, and kind of echo the distribution of the gulls. The shot of the hardy picnickers is great, too.
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Thanks for the comments.
I'm not sure about that crest or motto, Janis. We never did latin at school, many years ago, in fact they struggled to teach us English. ;)
It shows a wild boar with a sword in its back. The family name is Durant. Perhaps it means I'm descended from a bunch of pig stickers! :D
Maybe someone else can do a translation.
With the third image, Bruce, there are a few bits of scaffolding pole arranged to form handrails.
I did take a few different angles looking towards the castle and I think this is the best of the alternatives.

Week 25 - The Window Cleaner
Turned out nice again - was the the catch phrase of 'When I'm cleaning windows' singer and comedian George Formby. And indeed the sun did appear in the afternoon; so after doing a bit of garden work I nipped down for a beer.
Only had my Fuji X20 'pocket camera' with me and the lighting was a bit of a struggle. Bright sky, white walls on the left with deep shadow on the right. So I shot an average exposure then did a merge of two Raw conversions, plus a few other tweaks.
The longer view.

A bit closer and with more people in the scene.

Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Janis. I've done a bit of research about that crest and inscription on the lifeboat boathouse.
It translates as Blessed are they that endure.
Richard Durant purchased a mansion and estates called Sharpham overlooking the River Dart (between Totnes and Dartmouth) in 1841 and it remained in his family until 1940.

Thanks, Geoff. The Latin I got; it was the symbolism of the sword through the boar, and the loaf of bread and the cross under the foot of the boar that I was curious about. I think I have books around here that might shed some light, but can't lay my hands on them right now. So, am I to take from your earlier post that you are descended from the Durants?
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Hi Geoff :) I missed some of your posts because I have been on and off recently. Lovely shots in post#48 and #49. Yes #78 is different from your usual style but you caught the expressions very well , good captures.
PS. Again good images in post #84 and #85.
PS. IMO the first image is the best in 'Window Cleaner' shots in post #103.
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
I liked the second one shot of the window cleaner series, athough he doesn't look too comfortable on the ladder which looks too steep to meet regulations🤕

No. Janis, I have no nobility blood running through my veins. Just from working class stock. ;)
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Thanks, Binnur and Joe. The window cleaner doesn't do anything high now that he has turned 65. Just the lower high street business a couple of times a week.
He is one of the old style cleaners who will do a street with just one pail of water and a scruffy looking cloth. Most of the modern alternatives use a van with a large water tank and motorised pump delivering quantities of water through a hose and long pole so they never go up a ladder. However, that does cause considerable disruption in those narrow streets.

You're a gent to me. ;) Nice set, btw.

Week 26. Some more scenes from around the town taken with my Fuji X20 'pocket camera'.
Cliff House Gardens. I was looking for some harbour scenes when I spotted this happening in front of me.

1/500 F7.1 Iso 200 Pity that the dog wasn't facing the other way. ;)
The Harbour from Cliff House Gardens. This is the sort of scene that I was intending before getting distracted by the previous image.

Another harbour scene from just around the corner.

1/680 F8 Iso 200. I had to limit the amount of foreground to avoid a wall; although I did also try some other angles which included the wall.
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Nice set Geoff :) The half pool is a bit distracting in the last image.
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Geoff, as always an interesting set of photos. Is there a story behind the old style green wood hulled ketch/yawl?
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
I had tried several angles to show the harbour and pool but that wall plus a car wing on the left and a building on the right always caused problems.
Any other workable alternatives mean including the wall. Is to too dominant? A different image size plus a bit of cloning produces this scene.
http://i67.tinypic.com/2natwkn.jpg
I even shot a few in portrait mode which does reduce the wall impact a little.

The green boat, Bruce was originally a sailing trawler from Brixham. For many years it was worked as a sailing holiday boat by the Island Cruising Club but a few years ago they got into a bit of financial stress and sold off all their cruising vessels. It then went to a historic sailing boat trust back in its original home port.
They now have several similar craft.

Geoff, I don't usually play around with other's photos but couldn't resist the temptation to crop from the bottom so that the feet of the lady in the chair are just included. What do you think of the idea?
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
Hi Geoff, on the window cleaner series I think the window cleaner is the main point of focus for my eye and therefore #3 I like. Good clarity, no architectual distortion and I can see the man's face. Better him than me though as I think at least I would like someone holding the ladder and making sure nobody or thing knocks the ladder.
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
I have missed a few here too, Geoff..sorry...I was dragged to Florida for a few days. These are all beautiful sceneries. I like the window cleaner too. Neat shots. As for latter batch, I do prefer not to include the swimming pool...
Re: 2016 Project 52 Challenge by Geoff F - 2nd Quarter
I don't think the wall too dominant at all. Maybe living half my life below sea level, protected from flooding by a ( sea defence ) wall gives me a different perspective!

Joe, this reminds me of when I lived in Richmond (BC, not Surrey, England), surrounded by a dike.
