I've tried HDR and Photomatix a few times and any reasonable outcome was mainly by chance. I've never really got to grips with understanding tone mapping and all those sliders. However, I was recently pointed towards a series of articles by a photographer called John Paul Caponigro on the subject of XDR - Extended Dynamic Range, which (for me) shed some light on what all those sliders do.
