    shell tower

In the north part of Amsterdam there is this tower, original named Overhoeks but known to everybody as the Shell Tower. It was empty for a couple of years and used for advertising with huge canvas. The canvas used was 52 by 25 meters, 1300m2. When I saw how that was changed evry month, I started to make pictures of it. Everything is done from the outside. A metal frame is placed on the wall at which the canvas is connected by mountaineers. I took shots for some years with different gear.

The old canvas is untied from the top downwards.

When the sides and the the bottom are untied. the top follows and the canvas falls down.

The tower contains 17 floors, which has to be done by feet.
Hanging over the railing I didn't level the camera right, so loosing some of the borders.

    Yes, it's high.

The tower is renovated completely. For those who wants to know more http://adamtoren.nl/.

George, a very nice set. I particularly like 2-4. I like the perspective they provide. Makes for very dynamic images as we watch the canvas come down.

I like how on 5-6 we get a closer view of what the workers actually see.

Kudos for seeing the possibilities and having the foresight to take it on as a project over the years.

The tower has completely been stripped giving a special effect. Only the floors, stairs and elevator are left.

This place was a gallow field in the ancient days. Criminals(?) got killed in a special way in front of the city hall and then transported to the other side of the water where they were hang until they fell down. Rembrandt made a drwaing of it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsje_Christiaens

Good scenes, George. My only slight negative thought is with the last image where I would suggest either showing all of that crane on top of the building or none of it. At the moment that little bit appearing from the top edge looks strange.

It was already shot at the widest angle, 28, and the camera lifted up. I know what you mean. For some reason I don't like portrait for this kind of pictures.

Thanks for posting these George. You have a nicely photographed photo essay in this series that shows us a "behind the scenes" view of something few of us would ever get access to or even notice.
