A fly in flight
This is a Long-legged Fly Family Dolichopodidae (Try saying that after a bit of Rum). They are tiny, 1/4 inch or less Bugguide says <1 to 9 mm usually less than 5mm. Believe it or not, they are carnivores and kill smaller insects like no-see-ums.
When they take off, they jump backwards. Noticing that they seemed to jump every time my shutter moved, (I think they saw the flicker of the mirror) I focused on the edge of the leaf to the right at a point behind the fly. It cooperated and literally jumped into focus.

Re: A fly in flight
Brian...I wonder what Mr. Marimoto will think of this fly? (MM is the fella who is teaching me how to catch a fly with a chopsticks. I am still trying.) It is shiny so it must bite very good. I've seen this kind before and I kinda try to stay away from them. But good on you for introducing another flying object to the menagerie here at CiC. Can we call this one FIF? You have a good eye and steady hand to be able to catch this one.
