I think the Ozzies commonly call them plover. Also known elsewhere as masked lapwings.

Definitely a Masked Lapwing. But they are often (wrongly) referred to as Spur-winged Plovers - and other names if you have had one its spurs take a lump out of your head for getting too close to its eggs or young.
