Ashish - I've come back to look at this image several times today, trying to figure out what I think of it. I love the element of the boat, but somehow both the negative space on the right and the orientation of the image seem work less well than they should. In the end, I think the issue is balance and orientation.





I find turning the image 90°, trimming much of the water and a bit of the bow end of the boat might give you a stronger composition. Open this view of it in Lightbox and see what you think.

Interesting shot, Ashish. I think it is stronger in the horizontal format either with or without cropping. That river/canal area has really provided you some excellent subjects. Nice job.

I have to go against the grain here and say I prefer the original, but then again I am a fan of negative space when used correctly. And I think it works really well in this shot.

Thanks Manfred... i like the horizontal orientation but in my opinion its a tight crop. Also, i kept the negative space in the original because i liked the ripple shadows surrounding the boat which i felt added to the frame. I though the green negative space contrasted nicely with the ripple shadows.

Taking a cue from your horizontal orientation, i have tried another crop. Do let me know your thoughts.

Ashish - this is your image and it is up to you to decide how you want to present it. We are just throwing ideas at you that come into our heads. You have no obligation to follow any suggestions.

I too am a person who likes using negative space. The important thing to remember is the impact on the image. If it adds to the image, then use it. If it doesn't then don't use it. Obviously your own views and tastes come into play.

Moonrise, Hernadez, New Mexico is one of Ansel Adams's best know works. A lot of people will tell you it's his best work and I personally don't particularly like it. I find that there is far too much negative space. This is the personal taste part.

When I edited your image, I did play with negative space as well, and I cropped in a way that left a roughly equal amount of negative space starting in the top left corner as in the bottom right corner. The boat separated these two equal areas of water.
