The problem with the Black Dog/ White Dog Photo
from another thread
is really the lighting.
It is obviously a nice bright, bright sunshiny day from the looks of the shadows. Assuming that the dogs are always available for posing an overcast day would really give you a lot better chance of making something of the image.
A move to a place with bright shadows or reflected (diffused) lighting would make it better as would a bit of fill flash.

Agree with everything you say Brian. Plus the sun is above and behind the subjects, turning around 180 degrees and waiting a few hours would have helped as well.
Light is everything.

100% Brian and Simon - if photography is all about the light, this is about as bad as it gets. The metadata suggests it was shout at 12:16 in the afternoon.
Overcast day, morning or evening "golden hour" or shooting in the shade would all have been much better for this shot.
