A very nice shot, John. Great looking costumed individual that has been well taken and processed. Getting to Venice during Carnival has been on my "to do" list for a very long time now.

One of these years, I may actually get a chance to do this. My youngest daughter would definitely be unhappy if I wen without her, as this is also something she tells me she wants to do.

Manfred, the carnival is a must go. It's hectic and I guess it would be a nightmare if you don't like crowds but that has never bothered us. We stayed just off St Marks, around the corner from Harry's Bar and the hotel was surprisingly reasonable price wise. Events (carnival Balls etc.) and the cafe bars around St Marks are definitely not. Two bits of advice. Don't go up the Bell Tower on Sunday morning and if we went again, I think that we would stay out on the Lido. Less expensive in terms of restaurants etc, only a 15min ride on one of the vaporetti to the centre and you are much closer (in terms of the route taken by the vaporetti) to get to Burano/Murano etc. All of it is one big photo opportunity.

I stayed in a place called Mestre just 10 mins from Venice and it was cheap! Plus it had a lovely piazza full of bars/restaurants!

Well seen and composed, with good use of shallow depth of field to emphasize the subject .
My only suggestion is to eliminate the green blob to our right of the subject, which I feel is out of keeping with the rest of the images colour palette.

Matt, it's a fact that when in Venice you only think about Venice. But when you look at a map of the area there is so much more. I would love to go back but instead of repeating the Venice experience once more. it would be interesting to explore the area. Padua for instance.

Robert, it sometimes takes a fresh eye to see these things. Hadn't noticed that and you're right.

Richard, it's gold paint. He's even painted his mustache. I don't know who these characters are (residents or actors). They don't do much except pose (in every sense of the word) but they are there every day and must dress up and make up every day. They certainly add to the overall carnival atmosphere.

Thanks John. I'm itching to go already. We spent a couple of days (one night) in Venice four years ago and really enjoyed it. We were there in the middle of March and were surprised how busy things were in the "off season". We stayed in a nice little hotel in one corner of St Mark's square (the Concordia). I suspect the room rate would be astronomical at Carnival time, given its location.
