    Maybe the back surface of the glass is acting the way a lens does? projecting a inverted image on the front surface.

    Note that George's diagram and the one of Mark are showing the same thing - refraction.

    You can get the answer by elaborating on George's drawing of the ray between the object and the camera but Marks idea is also correct. The front glass is like a fat convex lens.

    Thanks for that diagram - we're going to try to recreate that in the lab with a laser or laser pen.
