What does the Bible really teach?
Taken last fall in front of the Toronto Eaton Centre, while I was waiting for my wife Barbara to finish her shopping.
As I often like to do when I meet them on the street, I was engaged in an interesting religious discussion with the Jehovah's Witnesses when an attractive young woman with some very interesting facial piercings and hair braids came by. I asked if she would allow me to take a head and shoulders portrait, and then thinking that her exotic look seemed ancient or biblical, decided to tie it in with the street preacher's message in the background. And got this shot.
motorized Nikon FA
Nikkor 24 f2 AIS manual focus
Fuji 100 ISO colour slide

Wonderful. I love to understand the thought processes that lie behind the decision to make a particular image. Thank you, Robert.
And, yes, the thinking did pay off. It works very well.

The image works on multiple levels. While traveling last year we attended a non-denominational church service one Sunday and this young lady's appearance would have fit right in with the rest of the congregation. The entire experience was far from our stereotype yet perfectly aligned with the message on the sign in your image. Nicely done.

Her look does have that tribal aura, nicely captured.

Nice shot Rob, and a very readable explanation.

Stunning image Robert,
So much to like.
The light on her face and the muted tones in the BG are awesome, none of which would work without the great comp though.

Robert...
Great shot! I would try to tone down the brightness of the building to the rear of the young lady. It keeps trying to attract my eyes away from the two main subjects...
Cropping out the majority of the building in a square B&W crop could be another way to display this wonderful image. It changes the dynamics of the image to a portrait of the young lady with her Mona Lisa like smile...

In interesting exploration of contrasts - the clean cut preacher with the woman with a somewhat non-traditional fashion sense. The shallow DoF works really well in this shot as it turns the preacher and his sign into a background for this shot.
The location also brings back some childhood memories of growing up in Toronto. I remember all of the wonderful animated window displays at Christmas at the former Simpsons store in the background.
