These are some wool hanks which is how we keep a record of our dyeing efforts. Mrs Ucci and I dyed this untreated wool with extracts from some of the leaves of the gum trees growing around our place, such as river red gum, grey, yellow and white boxes and iron bark. With some of the dye extracts we added simple mordents such as copper to intensify the colours.
We prefer the natural dyed wool to commercial dyes as they seem to give richer warmer colours albiet the end colour not being predictable. Which is half the fun to see what you get.
The blue tags on each hank record the identification of the tree leaves used and the details of the dye protocol used in each instance.
Thanks for viewing and for any comments. I posted this mainly because I felt the splash of colour was eye catching. Hope some others may share this view.
