    Gumball 3000

Some of my first attempts at panning shots. I managed 1 night of practice before the event. Reasonably happy for first attempt, ''could do better''. All advice, c&c welcome.

    Nicely done.

IMO, pans are easier to do successfully when the vehicle is going directly across the frame and less easy to do when the vehicle is approaching at an angle...

Additionally pans are far-far more effective when using an eye level viewfinder rather than trying to pan using a LCD viewfinder 12-18 inches or so from your face.

    Good looking shots Gerry.
Most of my experience with panning has been done at race tracks under sunny skies.
Good for a first attempt on your part, it takes practice.

Thank you Alan, I have few shots with cars head on, but I think my timing was out as I either got them just before or just after. So more practice needed

Thank you Richard, This was my 2nd attempt, one guy came back when I was doing a practice shoot on a local motorway to ask why I was photographing him, this was the shot

What did you say back to him?

Anyway, all good shots. I have not had much experience in panning lately but will soon have this weekend -- as usual, airplanes. Looking forward to it but it might be raining...have you ever tried banking shots?

I just explained to him I was taking shots for practice, told him about Gumball 3000, showed some other shots and he was happy. Never tried aircraft banking shots, but sounds good for the future

Thanks Matt, I really struggled with the panning, either shooting just before or just after directly in front position, but it was just an experiment
