Iso 400 is my default setting, Janis.

With wave movement I wouldn't really want to be shooting as low as 1/200, although you seem to have got away with it this time. And you need at least F11 to cover the focus depth.

This has turned out to be a pleasing composition for me.

Yes, it occurred to me after I posted that I was probably conscious of the wind and the waves. The next shot was into shore (you can see the same rock on the left) and the camera went to ISO 500. The next time I am on the beach in similar conditions, I will try opening up the aperture a little in favour of a little more shutter speed.

This has turned out to be a pleasing composition for me.

This too was edited in CEP, using the GND and Tonal Contrast filters selectively. I think there might be a touch of the warm green Foliage filter in there, too. I am trying to create the sense of spreading morning light, but it seems I either go too heavy or too light.

Did you try Brilliance and Warmth...although the clouds here are pronounced, I will perhaps add a light vignetting at the corners or Center Lightening/Darkening a bit of the corners. Or play around the Graduated Filters and push that Vertical Shift till the effect suits your needs...Just some suggestions for combination without overprocessing it. I had love playing around with CEP 4 a while back but lately my images just goes through some simplication with just Photoshop CS6 and/or Viveza and that is it...laziness I think...

Week 24

Was on the beach early in the morning a few weeks ago and shot a few frames that I saw potential in this evening that I didn't see before. C&C welcome, especially as regard processing.

Processed in CEP using the Neutral Density filter to darken the sky, the Reflector Efex Silver filter to bring out the reflection of the rock, and the Detail Extractor selectively applied to give some texture to the large rock and some of the clouds.

Janis, I really like the feel of this photo--perhaps in part because I grew up and still live near somewhat similar scenery.
My one comment is whether it might be worth cropping a very small amount off the bottom. That would lower the horizon so it doesn't cut the image in the middle.

My one comment is whether it might be worth cropping a very small amount off the bottom. That would lower the horizon so it doesn't cut the image in the middle.

I am loath to cut into the reflection, so I tried taking some off the top. I liked a 16 x 9 crop best, but I would have to redo the sky. Maybe another day. Thanks for the thought.

Oops, Izzie, almost overlooked your message. Yes, I tried Brilliance and Warmth on another one, but was far too heavy-handed. I will keep experimenting, though I am thinking I might finally take the long-delayed plunge into Photoshop. The thought of it almost makes me wish it was still winter.

Week 24

This was the week that I was supposed to get a bunch of cool shots of Interlake artisans and their wares, but there was too much to see and too little time to shoot carefully composed shots. One of these days, I will shoot studio shots of some of my purchases.

I was delighted to discover that a favorite gallery owner had, after a too-long absence, opened a new gallery near the location of the old. She was selling a trio of limited edition prints by a photographer I admire who used to live in the area but is now living on Vancouver Island. I bought one of them, a spooky image of a derelict farmhouse and a pair of talking crows, entitled "She's not there".

The one thing I felt compelled to record is a stunning work-in-progress by fibre artist Heidi Hunter. This is a detail of a ginormous quilt she is making that was hanging on a wall of her studio. It was shot with the Sony RX100M4.



Heidi had added a couple of windows to a corner of her studio, in front of which her notebooks were artfully displayed. This could have been better composed, but...

The quilt looks good, Janis. Pure white whites and black blacks; with everything else nicely falling into place.

I like the idea of including the outside garden with the inside area covered in notebooks. Possibly I might try to fractionally tone down the highlights on the grass, but not too much. On the left side of the window glass there is a strange scratch like mark. I'm not sure what it is but I would clone it out.

Hi again Janis Another lovely image. IMO there are too many nice elements in the image and that's why the composition looks a bit busy. I cropped some of the sky although it is beautiful just to give you an idea. Here it is.

Hi Janis. Loved the shots and the processing. Also loved to see the splash of flag in there. It always lends beauty to an image

Thanks for the suggestions, Geoff. I really wish I had done a better job of framing this shot as it was a lovely corner of the studio with great afternoon light and one could well imagine how conducive it must be to creativity.

Week 25

Still haven't got my cards back from Friday night, so I don't know yet whether any of my candids from the party turned out.

Meanwhile, these are some grab shots of the keel boat my brother bought last fall and just sailed across the lake to its summer harbour this weekend. I had a brief boarding Sunday and took some shots for the wife and kids back in Alberta who haven't seen it yet. (There is a cabin shot in this thread.) Weather permitting, he is going to take me and two of our nieces sailing this weekend. I am sooo excited! I loved sailing dinghies when I was a kid and am sure I am going to like this even more.
