I've used a tripod collapsed occasionally but that method ends up with a lot of mass and weight up top and only one leg carrying it all. I have a Mefoto Roadtrip carbon fiber tripod for travel which allows one leg to be removed to use as a monopod.

I have one of the RRS monopods I picked up a couple of years ago. I have a lot of RRS gear and have never been disappointed in what they've sent me. It's very light, has a nice adjustable and secure RRS head. I've never used it so I can't report on how well it does at stabilizing the camera.
Another thought about use of monopods. Although I have pretty effectively mastered shooting panos hand held, it is still easier to shoot a pano using a monopod.
Yep - a tripod is the best for panos but, this is a thread about monopods...
