    A Little Subaru Love

I'm a huge car enthusiast and love Subarus. I offered to shoot a couple of my friend's cars for some practice. We only had about 30 minutes of light left as we started shooting at sunset but I had fun none the less. I still have yet to invest in a CPL but I tried taking the reflections into consideration when composing. CC welcome as I am always looking to improve.

Very clean....I think you chose a good light angle on all these shots and away from the trees. I had taken car shots before in our MB events and without a CPL and very near the trees, the outcome were awful to say the least. Also wrong location, not much space between cars and of course since they were events and before lunch, the light was too harsh. Plus some people just love to park their machines near the shade of any trees. I had since stopped photographing car events even though I have a polarizer for each size of my lens. Here you have all the good things coming to you since this is a real shoot and you love what you were doing plus the fact that you love the cars you are photographing. It makes a difference because your feelings come out of your shots.

Thanks everyone! There's so many things to consider but it's worth it in the end.

I appreciate that this was something of a rushed shoot and was just for practice.

When you do get time to plan the shoots more carefully, always remember the background. The image that we see comprises both the subject and everything around it.

In this one, for example, we seem to have: a fence; a pole; a wall (cutting across the body of the car); trees and sky. They are fighting for attention with the car.

The potential for strong images is huge. Keep at it.

I think these are good enough to pass for commercial ads; rakish angle, reflections, all adds up to very nice shots and, printed and framed I bet the respective owners would be very happy to hang them on their wall. The half-wall, parking number, height relative to the background trees suggests to me upper level of a parking garage and if so, did the guys drift their way up?

What Donald says above, plus, when shooting black cars I've found you also have to look at what is being reflected in the paint too.
Good effort for a quick shoot, you got the camera down low which is good stuff, too many forget to bend their knees.

    Re: A Little Subaru Love

The only time my Subaru was that clean was when I drove it home from the dealer

Nicely framed, and good, crisp shots. I agree with Donald about the background: very distracting. A very minor issue is that the context where you place the cars will affect what the reflections look like, as in the front right fender of the first one.

I never forget to bend my knees and every time I try they remind me that I shouldn't plan on getting up quickly.

    Hi Josh,

Get in the habit of walking around static subjects several times, looking for the shot that's different .

    Get close...

    Fill the frame...

    Re: A Little Subaru Love

Love these images because I love my Subaru (I drive a Forester)...

I would however, crop the sky from the first two images and crop whatever it is at the top of the third image. In the last image, I'd tend to crop the bottom.

I don't worry about maintaining "standard" ratios for my images. I simply crop them the way I think they might look the best.

    Here is an example...

    A Little Subaru Love

I don't know how well a CPL would minimize the reflections (especially on the side of the car) but I might try that or I might try to find a location in which the reflection is not so obvious...
