This is the largest one I have seen and he was fearless. I had to nip off a leaf for a clear shot and he just sat there.

Are you sure you're not kidding us?

Having seen a couple of your recent bug shots, I think the Macro lens has already arrived

... and if it hasn't, CiC is going to be a scary place to frequent once you get started with it.

Can I think of anything to suggest to improve this?
It is a bit contrasty due to the harsh sunlight, so either:
Bring up the shadow detail a tad in PP (at the risk of revealing noise)
    OR
Use something small and reflective to fill light the shadows (at the risk of scaring even the "fearless" away)
(so get as best shot you can first (like this), then, if you can arrange it, introduce a reflector slowly and keep re-shooting)

Nope not kidding. This was taken with the 18-55. It would have to be pp.
When I saw him he was in the shade. when I plucked the leaf... sunlight.

Good to see you back posting, John.

I agree with the comments re the image. Very impressive work with an 18-55.

I had tried to darken it a bit more but quickly started losing detail.
