    Memory cards

First time this has occurred, has anyone ever had images recorded in two different folders on their memory card? My camera has dual slots and it looks like another folder was created one the first card before switching to the second. No big deal but if I hadn't been paying attention I could have formatted the card without noticing the second folder. The card was a Lexar Professional 633x, 32 gb, SDHC I.

Yes and fairly often. My Nikon cameras number files sequentially (as do all cameras?) and can produce 10,000 unique filenames (DSC0000 through DSC9999). the moment it pops over 9999, it creates a new folder and resets the file number to 0000 and places all the images in the new folder.

    Manfred,

Thanks for the info, I'll have to pay more attention in the future.

I haven't paid attention to the number interval but yes, I have had the same thing.

This is the first camera I've had with dual slots so when I setup the camera I just used the default settings. One of those moments when you have to read the manual.

On the Shooting menu of your camera, provided you are using a Nikon, go to Primary slot selection. Choose which one you want to use as your primary access to your folder. Then scroll to the next down and highlight SEcondary slot selection. Choose whether you want that secondary slot for:

    Overflow
    Backup or
    Jpg secondary.

I usually use the second slot for Overflow.

My Fuji creates a new folder every 1000 shots, doesn't reset the file number so I've no idea why but its something to watch when downloading files.

I think I formatted over the second folder about a week ago, luckily I have noticed and used RescuePro recovery software and was able to retrieve the images. I have to renew the software every year but it's worth it as I tend to need to do a recovery of a memory card at least once a year for one reason or another.

Have no idea why, but my son's Canon PowerShot A 3300IS does so every month, so there is a new folder after every 1st day on the calendar - but file numbers are always increasing (like, 701, 702 etc)

My Pentax is set up to create a new folder every calendar day (based on clock settings in the camera of course). The file numbers increase to 9999 and then reset to 0001... regardless of which folder they go into.

That is... the last image I took yesterday, say 0185 will be in yesterday's folder and the first one I take tomorrow (0186) will be in tomorrow's folder.

I see. the it must be the camera's settings. Anyway, it never annoyed me or created any problems, just made me wonder why it happens.
