There was a big swell running one day last week. I went to the usual location at the breakwater but it wasn’t particularly impressive, probably because it was high tide and the backwash from the breakwater was killing the incoming waves (which is what it is designed to do). So I headed over to North beach where the waves were providing a much more satisfying display.
The challenge then was how to capture this event so that people who are not familiar with the area gain a sense of the scale and impact of this storm surge. It would have been good to have a person on the water’s edge to show the size of the waves, but that would have been far too dangerous. So I decided to include the sign in the foreground instead, but even so, there is nothing to indicate how big the sign is. So I kept moving around until I was able to include the breakwater in the background, and was eventually lucky enough to capture this one image with the waves breaking over it.
In the distant background the cars might offer some sense of scale, and there are one or two people on the hill near the distant lighthouse which might also help, but maybe they are too far away to be of any use.
So, does the first image tell the story on its own, or does it need the second one, showing the breakwater, to help it? All C&C welcome.
