    Garlic

Not very original. Really just an exercise in high key. I had been photographing some of my wife's ceramics for an exhibition entry and while I was set up, I thought I would see what I could do. Comments very welcome as always.

On white art paper with diffused overhead light from a conservatory roof and some reflected flash off to one side.

Nice detail. It would make a great note card for a cook.

It's a very good image. But what I think people should particularly note is the fact that you had the idea for the image in the first place.

Very often it's not about the technical or aesthetic ability to make an image (vitally important thought that is), it's about the creative imagination and vision that sees/thinks of the image in the first place. That's what makes art.

Great idea, and good execution. All in all, a successful effort.

Very well done in both concept and execution. Sometimes, simple ordinary items can make a very nice photograph that connects with the viewer.

    Re: Garlic

Simple shot but very nice and neat. I am just wondering why the clove's shell is a bit dark-ish...It is supposed to be brown-ish but since this is a black and white conversion, perhaps light those black areas a little bit ? Just a thought...

    Re: Garlic

Many thanks for the comments all. Izzie, you could be right. I did darken the clove area slightly in the conversion to what I wanted for the image rather than an accurate representative tone.

    Re: Garlic

I thought same as Izzie, the cut area seems a bit too dark but...it's all about artistic expression. In any case I really like this image for its simplicity and for the fact that, hanging on a wall I would be sucked in trying to figure out whether it's an actual photography or a sketch. Great shot!

I really like the white on white. I'm often too concerned about having enough contrast between the main subject and the rest of the scene. This image reminds me to think outside of "my" box. Thanks.

You have just put on a master class on shooting a high key image.

    1. The image and background are dominated by light tones; and

    2. The image is properly exposed.

My only question might be is as to why you decided to go B&W here. The subject matter is so simple that I suspect that you lost more than you gained in taking away the colours, noting the comments from Jack and Izzie.

    Re: Garlic

Manfred, mono only because I wanted to do more B/W this year and I have been trying to alternate post between B/W and colour. This seemed to fit both and so..... I think that it works in colour as well ...see below. Thanks all for the continued comments. Sometimes you have an idea (usually prompted by something else you have seen) but it takes a bit of time to get around to doing something about it. This is one of those.

I'm curious to learn what drove you to post-process the monochrome version more like a drawing and to post-process the color version like a photo.

Texture I suppose Mike but I have only darkened the red areas slightly and added a little structure in Nik Vivesa.

They are both very nice, although very different.

Can you share a bit more about how you processed the monochrome? I think this is one that a lot of us could learn from.

    Re: Garlic

    Absolutely simple but absolutely effective!

Everyone who likes garlic should visit the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Central California. They have garlic in every type of concoction and dish. I am a garlic lover but, I draw the line at the garlic ice cream at the Gilroy Festival.

    http://www.whereverwriter.com/6-weir...rlic-festival/

By the way, driving by those Gilroy garlic fields when the crop is ready to harvest, you can smell the pungent odor of garlic if your vehicle windows are open or if your air conditioner is bringing in air from outside the car.

HINT: if you don't like the odor of garlic keep your windows closed and switch your car's air conditioning to recirculate
