A white bird shot head on means confronting two potentially tricky problems, Brian; but in this case it has worked well.

Overexposing the highlights is often a problem with wildlife and pets with a bit of white plumage. When the whole bird is white and is occupying most of the frame, the highlights are less of a problem.

What is the second problem? Getting the composition right? Please tell.

Birds tend to look wrong when photographed straight head on instead of sideways and with that particular angle there was a real challenge to get everything in good focus; so this has come out particularly well.

Truth be told it just feels like something is missing.

Perhaps it worked because of the muddy water?
