    Damselfly - another new venture

I recently completed the OU/RPS course that was mentioned on CIC earlier in the year. There were many things in it that I enjoyed, but one of the unexpected ones was that it encouraged me to try new things, or new slants on existing ones. I've done a fair few close-ups of plants and bugs at rest but decided the time had come to go damselfly hunting. It was quite a challenge, mainly because my gear (using filters) means I have to get really close to the intended subject; moving in quietly and gently and slowly to a damselfly at rest more often that not ended in a shot of the reed or leaf sans fly.

Here is one that didn't get away Technical details: Nikon D750 with +2 diopter filter.

Bill, welcome to the hunt! Insect macro is precisely as you described.. a great image of a recently vacated space quite a lot of the time. But, when you do get the shot.....

I do like this capture. The background of the lake? is perfect to set off the colours in the damselfly.

If I were to change anything, it would simply be to crop in a bit tighter using a letterbox style which would emphasise the damselfly more within the frame, as well as bringing out those vibrant tones more.

Thanks James - yes, you are spot on with the cropping suggestion. I've looked at it and updated the version in my library. You are correct with the lake too (or pond - it wasn't very large and is man-made).

Damselflies and Dragonflies are a challenge to capture but fun. Nice capture.
