    Pied Wagtail

Up on the fells again with a long lens. I've becoming quite fond of these . Apart from bobbing their tails up and down, if whilst your in the car, you catch them in the middle of the road, they have an endearing habit of taking off and flying just ahead and to one side of the car as if they are having a race. They will do this for 100/200 yds or more before they peel off. I don't know why or whether this is observed behaviour but it seems to happen regularly.

They also do that bit of behaviour when you are walking towards them. And if possible they like to keep the sun behind them so you are looking into the light which makes a photograph impossible.

    Good shot.

Both nice images but the second one really suits my taste. Love the PP.

Well, I have never seen the pied variety before!

John, the black and white variety are prevalent around here. They follow - or precede - you quite closely when walking on grass as you stir up insects, and then they swoop in and catch them. Some people find it intimidating, presumably because they don't realise the wagtail is not the territorial monster that peewees are, and are not actually attacking you like the peewee.

Thanks for all of your comment.

Geoff, perhaps fortunately, the sun had all but gone down when I captured these but I had noticed that behaviour. defence mechanism from ground predators perhaps?

Greg, from what I read, there are several varieties of Wagtail but it looks like Black and White = Pied. The next nearest is the White Wagtail which strangely enough seems to have grey shoulders but I'm no expert. I just like photographing them.
