    American Cowboy (C&C welcomed)

Yesterday, I was visiting with a friend. His miniature cow had a baby, and I wanted to see it. While I was there, his Dad came out to start his chores. This August he will be 80 years old. Every day he helps his son/daughter-in-law with the chores around the farm (which includes horses, miniature cows, and chickens). He didn't speak English, and I can't speak Spanish, but we got along famously. When I lifted my camera and in an awkward way asked if I could take his picture, he just beamed. When I was leaving, I hopped into my car, and he came over and signaled that I come back out. He gave me the warmest hug and kiss good-bye. It warmed my heart.

Great image... Somehow, you can just spot the "real thing" rather than the bagger from your local supermarket who dresses like he thinks a cowboy would look

I played with adding structure to his face which shows his age a bit better. Funny thing, I usually reduce structure in portraits of older females and add structure to the faces of older males (gives them character)...

As others have said, an excellent portrait. Getting the light on the face is always a challenge with such a wide-brimmed hat, but you have managed it beautifully.

That guy is a real cowboy. Not what we call a "Drugstore Cowboy" here in Wyoming. We can spot them a mile away. New boots, hats and jeans and driving an SUV.

What did this guy have on his feet?

Thanks Richard. He is the real deal!

I thought about that, but he looks great for his age and wanted to show him as he is...

Thank you Donald. i had to show him what I wanted rather than suggesting, so it was actually very funny. We both laughed.

Thank you. I'm actually going to have it printed, get a frame, and bring it to him as a gift. He beamed that I was interested in photographing him, and I know he would so appreciate the gift. He lives with his son, so they will all be able to enjoy it.

No question about it, he's the real deal. He had boots on his feet, but they were VERY worn.

Since you all seem to enjoy him as much as I did, here is one more. I was there to photograph his son in a barn hot shoeing a horse... so my settings on the camera were set for that, so my ISO was much higher than I would have liked (I don't like auto ISO), but I could't miss the opportunity.

Definitely another nice one! The fence adds a nice touch of context to the scene.

What characteristics of Auto ISO do you dislike?

Kim, I think you did justice to this gentleman, the image of him in front of a stall is excellent. It appears it was a bit awkward for the both of you, based on his expression. Still I think he would be proud (in a humble kind of way) to maybe have this picture framed and hung in his son's house. I'm wondering what it would look like in B&W. One thing I find interesting, even though his jeans are definitely work jeans, he's wearing a very nice, new(ish) shirt; to me that suggests he takes pride in what(ever) he does. You might consider a few Spanish phrases, I'm sure he would light right up hearing you try a few words.
