Did you climb to the top John? BTW before you get to the Abbey the steps bring you to St Mary's Church yard the interior fittings of which resemble a ship.
Best Regards
Peter
Thank you Peter and John for your comments. Peter, yes I climbed the steps (we parked in a lot near the church) and walked about the church - I did not realize the interior fittings resembled a ship.
Nice shot - I like the curves in the brick steps.
BTW: a significant event in the history of England (and correspondingly the world) happened at Whitby Abbey when a meeting was held by the Christian Church of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria in 663/664 to decide whether to follow Celtic or Roman usages. It marked a vital turning point in the development of the church in England. The King decided to follow the Roman custom and the English Catholic church was from then on under the Roman Pope...
If the Celtic Church had been opted for, lots of historic changes might have been transpired. Including that Henry VIII would not have needed to partition the pope for an annulment of his marriage to Catherine. Guess where that might have lead
How did you know it has 199 step? Silly question: did you count it on the way up or on the way down? This will remind me of a tv advertisement on a necklace-type where an old guy climbed some steps up carrying his bicycle, he pressed a button on his necklace and it called 911. Anyway, would I climb this? I have no idea...but I will try. Nice shot. Invokes the thoughts.
Nice shot John. When we are there (Whitby is a favourite short break haunt), I always get to this point but we have never climbed to the top. It's a must do.
Thank you Richard, Izzie, and John, I appreciate your comments/feedback.
John, thank you for the additional historic background on the the Abbey.
Izzie, I am assuming that the signs were correct about the number of steps. I did try to count them, but lost count as I stopped several times to take a photo (or catch my breath as I climbed up).
Very nice...climb the steps diagonally; you will find it very easy; i always do that when the steps are not crowded and enjoy climbing
