Paintshop Pro X8 Ultimate

Our rescue group is purchasing a photo editing program for a volunteer member who has a very nice camera setup now (thanks to the generosity of a CiC friend).

Our editing program choice might be Corel Paintshop Pro X8 Ultimate

I am leaning towards Paintshop Pro because at B&H in New York this is available in a bundle along with OnOne Perfect Effects and Aftershot 2 as well as Perfectly Clear 2 SE

What do you think of this choice?

I've used PSP for years and find it quite adequate. Since somewhere around X4 it has supported 16 bits per channel editing, which I find very important. It also supports many Adobe-compatible plug-ins, like the Topaz series -- again, something I find important. It has pretty much every capability you'd need (it does layers, for example.) The things that I'm less than thrilled with include that the raw editor is pretty basic. It works and can get you where you need to be, but I still use Nikon's ViewNX2 for the raw processing because it is just plain better at it. And second, there is not as much tutorial support as you get with Adobe products. Especially if you are going to leave this as a utility for whoever volunteers at the animal shelter, it may be better to bite the bullet and go with Adobe. But, if it will be a one-man dog, that's probably not a major issue.

Good luck on that one. I found the lack of resources on PSP as one of the factors that I stopped trying to learn it. Corel might be a local business (they are headquartered here in Ottawa), but the support is not up to snuff.

I'm a bit confused. As far as I know the raw-converter is named AftershotPro, in your link it's Camera Raw Lab.
And the organisational tool is called After Shot 2. Maybe something changed.

What do you think of this choice?

Is the member familiar with "fancy editing" or desirous of climbing a really steep learning curve i.e. masks, layers, color spaces, color management, sundry arcane brushes, merging, blah-di-blah?

If not, FastStone Viewer (small donation), or the like might just do it.
