Simon, nice pic: however my eye wants to wander to see what is behind your subject. I would have used a shallower DOF.
    Just my humble opinion.

Very nice capture... Regarding the comment by Bruce that his eye wants to wander behind the dog, IMO a slight crop at the top would eliminate the bottom of the gate and thus eliminate the tendency of the eye to wander to the rear of the dog...

Thanks Bruce and Richard, I agree. I have a tendency to crop to standard formats: 1x1, 4x5, 16x9 and so on. I should resist this, because it really isn't necessary.

Thanks, Izzie. Yes, he is a good-looking beast, but so black and furry that he's difficult to photograph in anything other than direct sunlight, especially when using autofocus. It doesn't help that his idea of playing 'Fetch' is to grab the ball and take it back to his bed upstairs on the deck, where he guards it jealously.

This was cropped to the original ratio. It also eliminates the end of the brick path at the bottom of the original image...

I agree that black dogs are difficult to capture. I usually use a bit of fill flash at a low power to grab some highlights in the coat

We used to have a dog who looks like that, Simon...we called her Miss Piggy. Anyway next time you want to play fetch with him, have a little treat in your hand and have him smelling it first before you throw the ball, then ask him to bring/give it to you first before you give him the treat. Dogs are a creature of habit and like to work for their supper. Always.
