I liked it; we will wait for expert opinions about the use of flash here

Really nice result Brian! How did you set up your flash? BTW: I added a bit of NIK Viveza Structure to the image and it helps a bit...

Brian. Nicely executed. I also would like to hear about your flash set up.

That works fine, Brian. There are positives and negatives to shooting macro subjects with flash, but for me it is my 'default' position.

    Hi Brian,

Nice shot and the flash has given good exposure, I assume, from the angle of shadows, it was the on camera flash above the lens?

Somehow, you seem to have avoided the contrast in the shadows, I guess the ambient exposure wasn't too different.

Commendable composition and a nice simple, clean background.

    Well done, Dave

Hi Dave and everyone else, as some of you may have realized I tend to get good with what I have before I buy new gear. So yes Dave is right this is the on camera flash.

Last week Geoff told me of his goto settings for flash macro work and I gave them a try. First thing I realized is that my camera won't give me his setup. Then i found out that I have two flash setups in the a58, ADI and pre-flash TTL. I find I get better results with ADI.

The fly was shot at IS0 200, F/14, 1/125, AWB, and of course... manual.

I prefer natural light but when it is not enough I am finding that if I set the aperture to a speed that I can use, in this case 1/125 it automatically adjusts to get me a reasonable shot. If not I can alter the flash as i would exposure compensation.

I am no expert but it is getting there.
    B.
