Red glow in all pics taken with Nikon D610 and Long Exposure

Peter, my thought regarding the chronology of the problem and you covering the V/F eyepiece with a thumb is that may explain the red tinge, particularly if the back of the camera was in a pool of light.

Hey Dave, thanks for the tip that my thumb might have caused the glow, but I haven't covered the viewfinder with my thumb in every picture I took. Most of them were actually taken while the viewfinder was not covered.

I have the suspicion that it had something to do with the fact that VR was switched on at my lens during the first long exposure shots. I turned it of somewhere in between, but can't recall when exactly. I could imagine that the slight camera movements during the long exposure shots caused the VR to move whatever it moves, which might have led to a distortion of the incoming light. I'll test this theory tonight and let you know about the result.

I can see if the VR was on in the exif in CaptureNx. So it's written somewhere. You can try viewnx if you want.

Beside that, never use vr on tripod.

Unless you have a lens that has a mode specifically designed to be used in conjunction with a tripod or unless you're using it on a windy day with a less than perfect tripod where the VR can still help. Also bare in mind some systems can detect when they're on a tripod and control the VR automatically and some switch the VR off wen you use the delayed release so switching it manually issn't necessary.

Hi. I was wondering if you ever found a fix for this issue. I am having the same issue with my D610 using the kit lens. It began right out of the box. I figured it was user error as I was new to photography, but has not gone away with experience. Of course Nikon wants me to send it in to (likely) replace a sensor which will cost 100s of dollars. Would welcome any thoughts on this. I consistently get red flaring on the left side of the photo (in Viewfinder) after long exposures.

I can't remember a particular solution for this problem. I traded in my D610 for a used D800E eventually. However, I remember vaguely that I could mitigate the problem by shutting off any auto-stabilisation feature on both the lens (e.g. AutoFocus) and on the camera (set on Long Exposure Noise Reduction). Try out these features and otherwise I'd bring it back to the shop or at least ask them for tips.

However, the fact that your camera also behaved like this out of the box makes me think that its a user error or (but rather unlikely) a production line error. In any case make sure to bring back the camera before your right for return expires (usually 1 month after purchase) if you cannot resolve this issue.

I am facing almost the same problem. My camera is Niokn D610. How did you get rid of that problem? If I start taking long exposure shots, after shooting 3-4 shots, I start getting such red glow (from left part of the image). I am really worried and I do not have enough budget to buy a new one right now

as mentioned above, I traded my D610 in for a D800E. I think I resolved the problem by deactivating the auto-focus and stabilisation functions of my camera and the lens. I hope this helps.

I always wondered why this tapes where on the lens. First I thought it was to fix some settings but maybe it's to prevent light coming in.

What I like (compared to say Lynda.com) is that you can download CL course lessons to your HDD and watch even when not connected to internet

Just a note about Lynda.com. I found that if I am actually playing the video, I can right-click (on my Windows box) and select to save it to my hard disc. I have been able to save a large number of courses (and in the case of PP courses their working files) on my computer for independent viewing.

Black Gaffers Tape makes a great substitute for the little "black thingie" that many of us lose or misplace. In addition to covering the viewfinder, gaffers tape is the "Swiss Army Knife" of camera accessories. There are many-many other uses for this handy tape. The Gaffers Tape will not leave an adhesive residue - don't use masking or duct tape as a substitute. I will strip off a couple of yards of Gaffer's Tape from the roll and re-roll this into a smaller size and I carry the smaller roll in my camera bag.

BTW: whether you need to turn off the Image Stabiization when the camera/lens is tripod mounted depends solely on the type and brand of lens/camera you are using. I don't know about the idiosyncracies of other brand cameras but, you need to turn off Canon image stabilization if tripod mounted only when you are using a lens with an old version of IS (such as the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS which has the first version of IS). More modern Canon IS systems recognize that a camera is tripod mounted and shut off the IS. Canon mentions that you will save some battery power by turning off the IS when tripod mounted but, battery power is the least of my worries.

Richard - I agree with you with regard to Gaffer's tape, but the stuff on the lens looks like duct tape, not Gaffer's tape. It's super gummy and very hard to get off without leaving a lot of residue.

I'm Seeing a very similar issue with my D750. This is with all image stability off on lens and camera, AF off, and with viewfinder covered. Not sure if there is anything else to try. Not one picture with lens cover and once with scene. This happened numerous time through the night with 15-25 second exposures and with ISO 5000 - 12800. Any other thoughts??

I agree. I can’t see how image stabilization or AF mode could have anything to with this.

It’s interesting that it’s one color. I am guessing this has to do with the location of the leak and therefore the angle at which the light hits the microlenses.
