What I see when I bring this image into photoshop (and I see you use Gimp so not sure how it works in the program) is a pretty profound color cast which tends to obfuscate the nice detail you obtain through focus and exposure.
There can be several reasons for the color cast: One, you are shooting in dim light that is predominately reflected yellows and greens, two, your flash may need to be color corrected and three, your camera's WB setting might be too warm toward the green/yellow side. Those would be my best guesses and all can be corrected for in post processing as well but not nearly as well as before the shot is even made. Love the closeup macro work. I just don't have the patience for it.
