    Foxes in the Woodpile

I have become so used to this that it took my wife's brother and his wife to alert me that this is a bit unique. At the edge of our lawn, about 50 metres from the deck, we have the log pile left from clearing the land to build our house 10 years ago. We have left it because every year we have a fox use it as a den. Do not have the heart to burn her house down. We have become so used to their presence every summer we just accept it. Quite blase about the whole thing. Like the deer that pass though the lawn area we see them, like to see them but it is just part of the scenery.

They were amazed that we can sit on the deck and watch foxes. They will go onto the lawn, but it is really hard to get images of the pups playing on lawn because of the low light. i have tried, but wild life photography, waiting for hours for the right shot, is not my forte. I am quite content to just watch rather then peer through a telephoto and hold stock still for extended periods.

At my sister in laws insistence, I present my foxes.

Trevor really like second from last shot, searched all around the wood pile then spotter it in the greens.

    Hello, Trevor's foxes!

With something like this, you're not aiming for fine art that's going to hang in the world's elite galleries. But you are creating an important visual documentary of life in and around your home: your environment. So, you still give it your best shot in terms of producing quality images as opposed to just holiday snapshot type pics.

And in doing so, I think you've succeeded wonderfully. You're showing us the foxes in their environment (which they share with you) behaving naturally and undisturbed, via well composed and exposed images.

I elected to crop showing the size of the wood pile and the fox a little less prominent but as part of the environment. Glad it worked. Your reaction is exactly what i wanted to achieve.

One of those instances where familiarity breeds contempt. Just too easy to go out on the deck and shoot pictures. And because I could not get National Geographic quality pictures I quickly lost interest in trying. Your point is well made. At some point in the future i would kick myself if I had never documented the foxes. Glad my sister in law pushed me to go out.

These are my best attempts at catching them playing

These are impressive, I wouldn't worry about the lowlight shots; there are ways to get them but you may not want to go through the trouble or expense. There are remote night vision cameras that are triggered by motion, you could setup one of those, sit back and relax and download your captures later.

I just thoroughly enjoyed these shots, Trevor...you have quite some beauties and cuties there. Do you feed them? How do they survive? I like your commentaries too...sometimes, the things you take for granted because it is normal to you is not really normal to us normal mortals. Good for you for taking the time to photograph them. Donald couldn't have described it better..

Well said, Donald. Y'all know that I never tire of foxes and enjoy photographing them in our neighborhood. Your photos made me smile and I'd spend hours on your deck watching them. Their antics are amusing. But I understand your attitude. After 7 years, I no longer grab my camera every time a fox or deer comes through the yard. The last three shots of them playing are my favorite!

Fantastic series, Trevor - I always enjoy looking at wildlife images. Kudos to you and your wife for not destroying the family den

I'd guess you have no need for a dog when you've got these guys around.

Wonderful series... However, as I viewed them, I kept thinking about my chickens. They would be the "blue plate special" for foxes...
