    Question about cell phone photos

I captured an image on my cell phone that I would like to post-process on my computer. It's a 4MB image. However, I notice that if I crop it using my cell phone, I am given the choice of saving it as either an 8MB or a 5MB image. I assume that's because the cell phone automatically upsizes it. Am I better off upsizing it that way or upsizing it using the post-processing software I regularly use on my computer?

Sometimes, my DIL would send me some photos of my little grandchild and will load it to my computer via ACR. My ACR is configured to take any image and change it to its native 360px (for ProPhoto). I then edit it accordingly. It may not be suitable to you this way, but that is just an observation on my part on the images sent to me.

Mike, are you unable to send the captured image to your computer as-is (4 MP)?

From a general POV, I'd say that less processing done in the 'phone, including cropping, the better.

I'm sure I'll be able to do that.

Lacking definitive information to the contrary, that would be my thinking as well. I don't know the details about this stuff so I decided to ask just to be safe.

Firstly I would try all options to see which you prefer.

As a general rule I transfer the original file to my computer and edit it in the same way I would a file from any other camera - in my case I import them into Lightroom. If I need the files immediately then I plug my iPhone into my Mac and copy them directly if I'm not in a desperate hurry I'll wait until the iCloud does the work for me.
