    We live in the Philippines on the side of a sleeping volcano in the provinces. When we first moved here to place a phone call I had to fire up the gen set, hook in the computer and vhf radio and send it out via the local ham radio club on another island.

    Now the ubiquitous cell phone dominates the culture. 50 years ago people used conch shells to communicate to their distant neighbors now it is cell phone.

    Brian, I wonder, if when Gutenberg invented movable type making printed books more available, people said "This will destroy conversation. Instead of talking to each other, people will always be reading those darned books at the dinner table"
