I think this is a common thing about "foreigners" (people from Western civilization)... when someone says they can go barefoot, they wear socks instead. It does not matter whether it is the beach (now they invented flip-flops for that..) or the street. I don't think they want to step on snots of another person especially in the street...
The circumstance is nice but the multiple technical defects really bother.
The over contrasty grainy look - and the westerner almosts looks like he was pasted in - there are sharpening halos on everything and the asymmetric perspective distortion. all combine
Sorry.
John,
I've got to agree with Lew on this one.
I like the composition, and the moment in time you've captured, but don't like the overly post-processed look you've chosen.
Robert
The post processing is a matter of personal taste and you obviously chose it for a reason. I think it's a pretty cool moment.

Hi John I agree about the halos , I think they need reducing. I would also lift the very dark shadows just a bit.
While I do agree about the PP. this is a neat image illustrating cultural differences...
Okay, John, having looked at the histogram of this shot that you posted in Lew's thread, I have a technical question. The gaps that we see in the midtones of the processed version, is that not something one normally wants to avoid? to avoid banding or other issues?
Sorry for cross-referencing, but the topic of Lew's thread seems to be more general in nature and I didn't want to steer it off track.
Hi Janis,
Somehow I missed your comment, hopefully you are still interested in discussing. I think the gap filled histogram would be an issue if the image were in color, most of my adjustments were made to overcome the intensity of the background light and to at the same time increasing the exposure of the foreground. If I were planning to print this image I'd probably do it a bit different, however I think my printer could handle the tonal range so I would analyze this composition for any offsetting effects, or as you pointed out any banding within.
