    Pentax K1000

So I've decided to give film photography a go, I think there's a lot to be learned from and it - and I definitely think we get it too easy with digital sometimes Pentax K1000

I bought the Pentax K1000 on Ebay after doing a bit of reading (it also came with a Toshiba flash but one step at a time), and I plan to shoot my first roll of film tomorrow (if the rain stops)

That's interesting, Matt. I was just thinking last night about taking my own K1000 down off the shelf and finishing off the roll of film I know is still in there. It may have been prompted by a video I watched of a conversation between Joe McNally and longtime Life photographer John Loengard. At one point, John compares and contrasts the virtues of digital and film photography and suggests that the lack of immediate feedback in film may cause one to think more deeply about each shot, the difference being the time for reflection between the taking of the shot and the seeing of the results.

I will be looking forward to reading about your experience and seeing your images.

Hi Janis, I definitely agree that it makes you think about each shot more.

I think for my first roll of film, I'm just going to take a walk around and shoot whatever interests me.

I'll be sure to post my thoughts and images on the forum Pentax K1000

After I purchased my first DSLR camera (Canon 10D - ten years ago), I retired my film camera gear (finally to sell it at next to nothing prices) and never shot another frame of film. BTW: I have not missed film a darned bit!

Janis: The concept that "At one point, John compares and contrasts the virtues of digital and film photography and suggests that the lack of immediate feedback in film may cause one to think more deeply about each shot, the difference being the time for reflection between the taking of the shot and the seeing of the results." is to me pretty lame. You can duplicate that by not chimping with your LCD and waiting a week before you open the images on your computer

Originally, film had some pretty decent winning points against early digital cameras. Price and quality beat the digitals outright. However, IMO, digital is the way to go unless you are interested in this If you're interested in wet glass plate photography

Why wait for the rain to stop? Get under an awning and make your exposures challenging from the beginning. All the theory is the same regardless if it film or digital. It is still all about time and light.

I don't see why you have to choose between one or the other - I'll still be shooting digital while experimenting with film Pentax K1000

The flash looks pretty useless. It looks like one of those totally fixed units where the flash only points straight forward.

Feels very cheap and light, I don't plan on using flash with this camera in any case.

I would miss the creative control of being able to work in my own 'dark room.' I would also go bankrupt buying film and paying someone to develop it.

But if you got an itch you best scratch it.

Nice simple and well made camera the K1000 - that lens by the way is a properly good buy and offers superb quality. I have the AF version but its very, very close optically.

One of the beauties of the K1000 is the meter. It is almost identical to the Pentax Spotmeter used by professionals all over the world since they came out; I still use mine. I have thirteen K1000's now and anytime I am in a pawn shop and I see one, I get it. (I give them away to film students at local schools in my travels.) I have a friend in San Jose who is one of the few still able to repair 35mm cameras and he also donates his time and materials so we can do our part to keep film alive.

As I said, I'm not shooting film exclusively - its just another part of photography I'm exploring and learning about.

I wish your pocket book well Matt.
I inherited some of the most sought after cameras made and can't afford to shoot them because of the cost of film processing.
