It is a very common scene with these birds. They are predominately small fish eaters and are constantly in the hunt moving from cypress knee to cypress knee as the sit close to the surface allowing for an overhead position and a firm place for a foothold.

Great shot...am I the only one that has trouble with the center of gravity.
He seems ready to do a face-plant in the water.

He is doing a face plant. That's how they fish. They see a disturbance just under the surface, mark the spot and in the time it takes you to blink, they make the strike. It's incredibly fast.

I thought it has its eyes above water because he doesn't want to miss out on what is on land or other fish further... you know, like a child who doesn't want to go to sleep because he might miss out on some happenings...birds are like that too...
