I did get a side on one of a bee of the non-bumble variety, at rest on a leaf of a hebe shrub:

Hoverfly. Short antennae.

Merodon equestris. One of the dark forms and a good bumblebee mimic.

For identification notes. See the deep loop in a wing vein, middle of wing and slightly towards the outer half. This places it into the Eristalis group, although actually a different family. Can be separated from other Eristalis by the all black legs and a triangular projection underneath the hind femur which is nicely shown in this image.
