    Treacle Market

One of the nicknames for my hometown of Macclesfield is "Treacle Town" (based on an old story that a wagon carrying treacle overturned in the town and all the inhabitants ran out to scoop it up). Anyway, on the last Sunday of every month there is a "treacle market" for local food and handicrafts. We found this lovely and charming lady selling their own chilli condiments, so we bought some for an Indian friend.

Of course there is back story, which I will tell first. We told her why we were buying, and she said that the chap behind her had been born in Calcutta. Anyway, it turns out she is an actress Deborah Bouchard who has appeared in Coronation Street and Emmerdale (British readers will know what they are). The chap from Calcutta, her husband "Bongo", was the original drummer with Tears for Fears, and has toured with Peter Gabriel, Dolly Parton and Joni Mitchell among others, and they live not far away. Amazing who you can meet.

They were standing under a red canvas roof, which on a sunny day made pp a bit of a challenge, and I'm sure many of you could do better. Still, nice lady and a happy pose

Very nice shot Dave As far as I can see the red color cast mainly effects the hat but doesn't effect her face very much, so I don't think it is a big problem.Very cheerful lady.

What a happy lady. I recently tried to remove a red cast from someones face and I must say that you did very well with this one. By the way, Coronation Street is very big here in Canada too

The image so clearly indicates that both the photographer and the subject were having a lot of fun. Is the woman displayed in the rear poster by any chance also the subject of the image? If you're concerned about the red light cast on her skin, the easy solution is to convert to black-and-white.

Great pose. Could it be converted to B&W please. That is only my opinion.

    Re: Treacle Market b&w

Here's an attempt at b&w. I've never tried a b&w portrait before, and the way I would tackle a landscape really didn't work at all! If anyone who knows what they are doing would like a try I would be grateful. MIke, I think it is her in the poster)

A nice little addition. I found their web site and sent them a link (to CiC, it was easiest) and got a lovely reply from Debs. She's put it on her Facebook page, and with great courtesy attributed it: https://www.facebook.com/bongosrocka...?ref=bookmarks

I kinda like this black and white better, no more colour cast to worry about. Well done.

You did a nice job with your conversion, Dave, especially considering that you hadn't done that with a portrait. When converting a portrait of a Caucasian, a green filter generally works best because of the pleasing skin tones it produces. However, that filter also emphasizes imperfections in the skin, so much so that the shade of green can be very important. My experience is that a yellow-green filter is often the ideal choice. The subject's skin tones in your conversion look good to me.
