Does the sound of the shutter make you cringe or do you just take it in stride? Nice effort.
I think it depends on where you are. I think it's easier to get lost on the commotion of a busy street, but you are a lot more conspicuous in the rural areas around my home. Being out with my wife and daughter really helps as I'm just a dad with a camera, not remotely threatening. I do t think many people mind being photographed - in this country most of don't have a choice with all the security cameras - but it is different when someone sticks a lens in your face.
I've git to get braver about asking to take portraits rather than just doing stealth shots. I've met a couple of people over the weekend who would have made great images, but I didn't have the confidence to ask at the time
You are giving me some inspiring thing to practice...I was taught how to do this a few years ago but never really followed up on it. Thanks....
Simon, very well done for from the hip. It looks like you're getting used to the focal length. After a while you get to know how to position the camera and where you need to be to get the shot without looking in the viewfinder or lcd.
Just go up and ask the next person that looks interesting. It can be nerve racking, I know, but all they can say is no. You then just thank them and walk on. You'll be surprised by how many say yes.
Have fun and be safe.

This was shot at 1.7, 1/1000, iso 200
Even with the greater DOF of a smaller lens/sensor, 1.7 is just too small an aperture. - a DOF of just over a foot
This looks to me like your camera missed the focus. His hands are in focus and his face just slightly blurred.
You could easily shoot at f5.6 with a great dof without straining the shutter speed or the iso.

Thanks Lew - yes, you are right of course, and it's something to consider for the future. It will make life a little easier...
