    Provence: Ancient City of Glanum

The ancient city of Glanum is in the Provence region of France near St. Remy de Provence. It was first populated in the 7th century B.C. and was developed over the Hellenistic period and then by the Greeks and the Romans to include public baths, a swimming pool, a town hall area, monuments and a spring considered sacred because it cured sickness. My wife and I enjoyed visiting Glanum so much that we spent far more time than we initially planned.

These two monuments mark the entrance to the city and are the only parts of Glanum known during the modern era prior to the 20th century. That was when other parts of the ancient city were partially excavated. The tower on the left is a mausoleum and the structure on the right is an honorary arch typical of entrances to ancient cities.

This is the site of the House of the Antae, named after two pilasters decorated with Corinthian capitals called antae. The columns supported porticos of a three-level home. The ground-level basin was in the center of the residence and collected rainwater that was led first to cisterns and then to the sewer system.

It's amazing to walk on the slabs of stone making up the main street laid during the ancient times and walked on perhaps by some of the famous leaders of their time. The slabs also covered the sewer system. Captured by my wife and post-processed by me.

The columns on the right are remnants of the smaller of twin temples that were adjacent to each other in the monumental area of Glanum. That area is just below the uppermost end of the city and this scene also displays the lower end including the columns of the House of the Antae shown in the second photo. The trees at that end of the city hide the two monuments shown in the first photo.
