    Provence: Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard is a bridge 360 meters long over the Gardon River that is part of a Roman aqueduct 50 kilometers long. It was built in the 1st century A.D. to supply Nimes, France with water. Though it is no longer allowed to cross the river using the upper level, it is possible to walk the entire lower level.

The second photo was captured by my wife and post-processed by me.

Nice variety to the capture of this structure.

Nice compositions and processing Mike. I wondered if you had visited here. The aquaduct, with it's carefully controlled slope, is an amazing structure for it's time.

Another fine set of images. They work well together in providing a comprehensive visual description of the aqueduct.

    It is indeed. Advanced engineering.

Building it is one thing but designing and planning it without the luxury of the drawing aids that we have had in modern times, is quite an achievement given the geometric repeatability of the structure. Nicely illustrated and some good processing Mike (not forgetting the better half).

    Thank you, everyone!

This bridge really is a marvel to experience from every viewpoint including walking on it. The surrounding park area makes it especially easy to enjoy it at whatever level anyone wants including simply having a picnic, taking in the sunshine, or playing on a beach at the edge of the river.

I got a kick out of seeing images of the bridge on the Internet and in post cards displaying the warm glow of sunlight that occurs just as the sun is close to the horizon. I already knew from using Google Earth the two best times of day to visit the bridge and that the adjacent hills prevent the light of a setting or rising sun from striking the bridge. That explains why I didn't succumb to the tendency so often seen to make something of the bridge that it isn't, as if it isn't already special enough on its own.
