Locally known as Bluebottles; they are a member of the Portuguese Man 'O War family of jellyfish. When stung by them people usually say "OW! Fancy That". White vinegar offers some relief as does hot water.
Quite a few and unusually large ones were washed ashore today down on the Gold Coast.
A couple of weeks before the official start of Spring but the heat haze is already making photography difficult.

I loved the Goon Show!
I used to secretly listen to it at school, when meant to be studying for final year exams
We are at Sunshine Beach atm & saw some similar very large models of these nasty critters washed up.
Glad I wasn't in the surf with them prior to their demise!

From a first look at #1, I thought it was a cross between a Portuguese Man o' War and a Leatherback Turtle!
