An recent shot made during a contests called "Grand National". The aim of this competition is qualification in French teams of pure horse jumping.

What strikes me particularly about your images, Thierry, being someone who does not very often shoot at the f2 end of things, is the amount of depth-of-field you get. Others may have a view, but, for me, what we have here is a lesson that if you get the focus right and the point of focus in the right place, then even at f2 there's enough depth-of-field available to produce images such as this. A good lesson.

The other thing that strikes me about them is - they're magnificent!

That's probably because the horse doesn't care how many points he might lose. Whereas the rider has learnt to worry!

I think it depends upon how close you are to the main focus subject. If you are quite close then there will be more signs of DOF loss than if you were further back with a longer lens. I think!

I was expecting a tatty pub with a snug and saw dust on the tap room floor. The riders face is a picture on its own but it is a superb action shot

Thanks to all for your messages and comments. The goal is this wide opening as you could imagine is to blurr the background and by this way to highlight the foreground. Concerning the focus point, I use only the central collimator of my 7D or 40D. I try to place the collimator in the center of the horse shoulder.
If you have a clear view of the horse before the jump, if not I recommand you to preset your AF prior to the jump on the obstacle structure

Hi Jim,

During such competition, the environment is relatively noisy and it avoids to have the horse nervous due to noise. The second purpose is to avoid bugs in ears
