    Hi Steve,

Yes I was wondering that when we first saw this a week ago.

I think these are quite large lamps and there's a thick rope thing going down the middle of them all, the lamps, (possibly candles originally) must be arranged around the rope with the lantern over/around those at each landing stage, sort of threaded on the thick rope.

    Re: Rectangular

    Steve and Dave,

I'm not exactly sure how these lamps are constructed. Maybe the lamps are in the middle of the cages and the metal bars along the side of the cases supports and connects the wires on which they hang. But I don't know for sure I didn't pay that much attention than, and I don't remember since I shot this one I busy month ago.

Competition has moved on, so let's address your question, hoping that you will realise that this is just my ill-informed view!!
When I take a critical look at my images I tend to close my eyes (that bad!!) and then open them suddenly and see what 'hits' me first. In the case of your goose(?) it is the two white bands and the writing, whereas I guess it should be the eye. Solution; do away with them - the white bands that is !!
Whilst rules are definitely made for breaking, you cannot beat the good old rule of thirds as a starting point. I think your composition would have had more impact if the eye was at the intersection of the top third and left hand third of the image. This could have been achieved at the time of shooting but if you're like me and only realise that once you see the image on screen, then crop for effect.
Right well that's my 'five peneth' (quaint old British saying)
    Best wishes

    Re: On a lighter note

Thank you Mike. I tend to agree with everything you said. I was experimenting with a different border, but that is what jumps out. I'll save that one for something else, and make the text smaller if I ever try it again.
Here is a quick rework, and I do think it is much better. Perhaps not my favourite shot in the world, but certainly an improvement. I like your method of evaluation. Definitely worth the five pence ++++. Oh it's a Swan that came in REALLY close thinking I might have some food.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated.

    Re: On a lighter note

    Thanks Rob.
A close run thing, with some great images.
You asked how. The original image was cropped to get the cross in the position I wanted. In levels I set the white point on the the high contrast edges of the headstones, and the black point on the face of the stones. I had to darken the mid-tones and the blue channel for the sky. I also did a tiny bit of cloning in the clouds behind the cross to repair a hot spot, and that was it.
